A Chinese communique indicates that the Japanese troops which by-passed Hengyang have thrust a spearhead 4G miles below the city in their drive lo capture the entire Canton-Hankow railway route. A supplementary communique reports that the Japanese at Hengyang. on Saturday resorted to the continuous use of poison-gas shells. Many of the Chinese defenders lost consciousness. The Chinese claim to have made rapid progress iu a counter-attack toward Siangtan. The Associated Press says that China’s chief hope is iu halting the Japanese surge southward by such attacks against the enemy’s lengthening supply lines. .
