FLOW OF OIL
Mines Department Drill Near Liverpool Mine ‘ Dominion Special Service. GREYMOUTH, July 4. The drilling crew of the Mines Department working near the site of the present Liverpool State mine in the llewanui district have struck oil. Whether it is in payable quantities remains to be determined, and meantime, tlie authorities are maintaining an attitude of reticence and caution. The first signs of oil appeared a few days ago when tlie drill penetrated a depth of slightly oyer 1600 feet, and. though it is certainly not gushing, the flow has since increased. The oil is stated to be of extremely' thick quality. , To seek to ascertain the source and direction of the supply special equipment has been dispatched promptly from Wellington, and it is expect,-’! that by the weekend sufficient information will be available to determine the extent of the flow. , . , , The discovery has aroused fl'*-' interest of tho staff of the New Zealand Petroleum Company, who have been searching for oil in the No Town district for several months without result.
