Australian Coalfields Plan

SYDNEY, July 3. The Federal Government proposes to establish other industries in the coalfield areas after the war, said the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. F. M. Forde, when addressing the miners. The establishment of secondary industries on the fields would give the miners a choice of employment, as well as a greater sense of security. Mr. Forde also promised act ion to modernize the mines, including underground transport, better lighting, and the abolition of the dust menace as well as better housing. Continuing bis appeals for an increased output, Mr. Forde told the men that the present production figures indicated that Australia’s coal output this year would Im even lower than last year, which was 890.009 tons lower than 19-12. Despite the fact that 350 more men were employed in the industry than during the peak production period, the coal reserves were now less than half those of a year ago. Unless the coal output was stepped up war industries would tie slowed down with a rationing of gas and transport services.
