Fewer Screenings Likely
There was general agreement that the time had come for a revision of the present arrangements concerning picture screenings on Sundays, said the mayor, Mr. Appleton, at: yesterday's meeting of the Wellington City Council Mr. Appleton said that a council inspector who visited theatres open on Sundays for tlie entertainment, of armed forces, reported that the conditions of admission were not being strictly oh served. Civilians seeking tickets were asked if they were members of the fores (this included the Merchant Navy). If they replied that they were., they were issued with tickets without further inquiry. Civilians worn also asking servicemen to purchase tickets on their behalf. Theatre Management Limited had written slating that attendances were dropping and suggesting that only one big theatre, or two small, operate in future on Sundays. He thought the matter could be left to the maiiag°hient: to rearrange. Screenings at the Tivoli, which gave half the proceeds to bands, would not be interfered with.
