BATTLE FOR MINSK JOINED
Shrinking German Pocket

A battle to decide the fate of Minsk, Hitler's last, major stronghold on Soviet territory, has been joined on a large scale north-cast, and north of the town, says Reuter’s Moscow correspondent. The troops of tank expert. Chernyakovksy have swung across the network ot liighways controlling the north-eastern approaches to Minsk, while Rokossovsky, in a high-speed push beyond Slutsk, is thrusting forward mobile forces to cut off the Germans’ south-westerly escape route, the Minsk-Warsaw railway. At least 200,000 Germans are staking their lives on the defence of Minsk. A dozen German .divisions' arc reported to be still lighting strongly in the shrinking triangle. ____________
