Harbour Tug Crew

Sir, —The Harbour Board Employees’ Union read with a great deal of interest the report of the general manager to the board regarding emergency trips of the harbour board tug. In outlining the negotiations with the disputes committee the report does not give the position in correct perspective. There was an attempt to force the acceptance of the board’s offer and not enter into reconciliation to discuss the crew’s offer, yet the report admits the job is worth more than was offered by the statement that any claim for additional payment should be'dealt with after the return of the tug. The offer of £2O/10/5 is the chief engineer’s rating and does not apply to the crew. This looks rather a good offer on paper, but when it is taken into consideration that a week comprises 168 hours, it is very poor. Wc would suggest that a working agreement could be arrived at if the board were prepared to meet the men with a fair offer. I am, etc. MATENGA BAKER, Secretary. Wellington Branch, Harbour Boards’ Employees’ Union. Wellington, June 20.
