AUCTION BIDS NOT GENUINE
(By I'eh'graph.— Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. June 2s.
Admission by a witness that, genuine bids were not. made at an auction, but that the prospective buyers allowed tlie price to run up and relied on the land sales committee to bring the figure back to a reasonable level when tlie transaction came up for approval resulted in an unexpected and abrupt conclusion to a group uf eases lu-ard by the Canterbury Rural Band Sales Committee in Chrisieliureh today, when approval for new seven-year ienses; of Wnirewa County Council reserves bordering Lake Ellesmere and Lake Forsyth was sought by tlie trustees in several estates'.
‘‘This appears to be almost Un alm-e of procedure under the Act,” said the chairman, Mr. H. Nicholls. “It. is a question whether we should not refuse these applications altogether. It would be jusf too bad if tlie committee did nut have its eyes open ami allowed those (■uses to go through at these prices and some of these chaps got caught.” After consultation with Mr. B. S. Robertson, the other member present. Mr. Nicholls said that the eornmitlee would not hear any further evidence, but would refuse the. applications -forthwith.
