REFUSAL TO FIGHT CLAIMED
Chinese Communist Army (Received June 29. 11.30 p.m.) CHUNGKING, June 29. The Chinese Communist army last month ignored President Chiang Kaishek’s orders to fight the Japanese, said the Information Minister, Mr. Liang Hanchao. During the campaign in Honan Province, the Communists tn northern China were ordered to launch diversionary action against the invaders, but neither fought nor replied. The United Press of America says "that friction has long existed between the Central Government and tlie Communists, who allege that they are persecuted by tlie Chungking Government, which in turn accuses them of autonomous, conduct.
HENGYANG SURROUNDED
CHUNGKING, June 28. The Japanese have surrounded Hengyang, in Hunan, says a Chinese communique. Severe fighting is raging on all sides of the city. General Stilwell's headquarters announced widespread air attacks against the Japanese in Hunan. These have slowed but not halted the enemy’s advance. _________
