Enemy Delaying Tactics In Italy j (Received June 29, 12:50 a.m.) LONDON, June 28. “The Allied armes continue to attack in country favouring enemy defensive tactics.” says today’s communique from General Alexander’s headquarters. Hie enemy continues to cling stubbornly to delaying positions all along the front. “Fifth Army troops, steadily driving back the enemy, have occupied San Vicenz, Sassetta, and Chiusbino. French troops are now in the vicinity ot Quirico Sandorcia. Eighth Army troops made further progress near Lake Chiusi, and captured the villages of Giocella and Porto.
San Vincenz is a coastal town on Highway 1 about 12 miles beyond Piombino. Sassetta is a little way inland on a secondary road, and its capture represents an advance of about 16 miles from Piombino. The communique says that a medium force of heavy bombers yesterday attacked objectives in the Budapest area and the railway yards at Brod. Fighterbombers were active against the railways and bridges in northern Italy in addition to gun positions and motor transport in the battle area, Other fighterbombers- attacked the shipyard at »?s--trilenante and targets' in Yugoslavia. Fghters flew patrols and offensive sweeps. Adverse weather prevented medium bomber operations. Thirty-eight enemy planes were destroyed in these operations, and six of ours are missing. The Mediterranean Air Force flew approximately 1500 sorties. —
