Severe fighting continues On the northeastern outskirts and east of Hengyang, says the Chinese communique Heavy casualties have been suffered by both sides. Several Japanese columns are preparing for a concerted attack. Nevertheless Hengyang remains calm, but it is feared the Japanese will take the city. Lieut.-General Liu Weichang, writing in the army newspaper “Saota.ng tai. said: “China’s only hope now is an Allied victory.”
