YOUTHS CALLED UP
Service In Armed Forces 7071 NAMES IN GAZETTE The names of 7071 youths and men who have been called up for service in the armed forces are published in a Gazette issued yesterday. The majority are youths who have attained the age of 18 years since the issue of the previous list in November, 1943. “Under the present policy,” said the Minister of National Service. Mr. McLagan. “these youths will not be required for full-time mobilization before attainment of the age of 20, except those who volunteer for and are accepted by the Air Force. In these circumstances, no useful purpose can be served meantime in making appeals on the ground of undue hardship or by reason of occupation. Adequate facilities for appeal in such cases, will be afforded wherever desired before any mobilization following attainment of the age of 20. “There are included in the Gazette, however, numbers of men who. by reason of age. may be called immediately for full-time service, and in these cases, if there are grounds for seeking postponement. it will be necessary for the right of appeal to 'be exercised without delay.” The Minister also said that youths and others in the ballot who were not fully mobilized at an early date would be subject later to selection for one month’s' service in the Territorial Force. Special notice would then be given, however, to those who were selected for such service, and no action by way of apneal or otherwise should be taken in the meantime. Every assurance was given that those who wished to do so would later be given opportunity of lodging and prosecuting appeals.
