liberation of Cherbourg followed a day of fierce fighting in the north-west part of the city. Germans are still resisting at an airfield five miles east of Cherbourg, and others are holding out on the north-western tip of the peninsula, and at one or two isolated strongpoints on the peninsula The Cherbourg victory brings the Allies one of the finest P in Europe. The outer harbour, which the Germans would not be able to block, offers safe anchorage to the world s largest liners, and the inner port, the damage to which has not yet been assessed, was designed to berth ships of 10,000 tons. Yesterday a convoy of repair men and equipment was waiting in the Channel to enter Cherbourg and start work at once, diving expert told a correspondent: "We are ready for anything. With Cherbourg in our hands supplies will soon be pouring in for the invasion front.
