GOOD NEWS FROM THE WAR FRONTS
On practically all fronts of the war, on land and sea, and in the air, the prospects" everywhere, with the possible exception of China, give' promise of important future developments building further successes upon successes already won. The news from China, which is somewhat lacking in details necessary to form a clear picture, suggests that the Chinese armies in the interior are being heavily pressed by Japanese offensive operations apparently launched upon a formidable scale. As a partial set-off the Allies in co-operation with the Chinese have made important advances in Northern Burma. These two fronts of the war are linked in the general strategical framework of the Far Eastern theatre of the war, within which are also included the British naval sector in the Eastern Indian. Ocean from which successful raids have lately been launched, and the vast American amphibian operations in the Pacific under Admiral Nimitz and General MacArthur in which Australians and New Zealanders have notably co-operated. . In fact, as the eye ranges over the whole immense area ot the war, in the Pacific, the Far East, on the Russian fronts, in Italy, in Northern France, at sea and in the air, there comes an impresston of concerted Allied design in offensive planning and timing aimed at delivering the heaviest possible blows in the months immediately ahead with the most damaging cumulative effects. The real nature of this design is something the enemy no doubt would give a great deal to know. What he does know, and is plain to the average reader ot the news, is that the Allies in every vital theatre of the war have seized and are holding the initiative, and are animated with the offensive spirit and an inspiring confidence in ultimate victory. Except on the Chinese mainland, the enemy everywhere is on the defensive, and being driven from one vantage point to another further to his rear and nearer the heart of his resistance. A year ago it was possible to say that the tide had definitely turned in favour of the Allies. It is now sweeping onward with perceptibly mounting success.
