OPALTOWN AGAIN

Regal Night Nicely On The Flat

(Bi-

St. Simon.)

Regal Night. Opaltown, and First Edition were the winners of the main events at the Hawke’s .Bay Jockey Club’s winter meeting held at Hastings on Saturday. Regal Night and Opaltown won their races decisively, but the finish in the Hawkes Bay Hurdles, won by First Edition, was a thriller with the Gisborne horse narrowly prevailing from Epping and High Morale, who dead-heated for second. The meeting was run under perfect weather conditions and the track was dead though otherwise in splendid condition tor I this time of the year. The attendance was not quite up to the usual numbers, and the totalizator recorded a decline of £~oiv 10/- on last year’s figures, the sum handled being £29,656/10/-. A judicial inquiry was held after the running of the Hastings Hack Hurdles into the winner. Slglow. boring out on Combination, whom he defeated by a head. The stewards found that though some interference had been caused it did not affect the result and took no action. Making his first appearance as a hurdler since he won at Trentham 20 months ago, Siglow led practically all the way to win the Hastings Hurdles. Timothy. Black Saint. Tideoven, and Blue Title attended him for the first n?i-le. but after jumping the last fence he was tackled by Combination and these two drew away from the field. Siglow bored out nearing the post and beat Combination by a head. There Was a gap to the favourite, Blue Title, who finished third. x z i{„i c i n nq Two fields of 15 contested the of the maiden event and in each heat tho winner came late on the scene to run down the leaders and win ntcely. Both winners, Kauri Queen and Da Mnci, verc tT 'l°n s a a cloee ß contest for the Hawke's Bay Hurdles. First Edition scored narrowly from the favourite, Epping, and High Morale. Kilmanagh. Pompit, and Hlgn Morale had turns in the lead over the first round, but approaching the last time the field, excepting Llndrum, bunched up, and High Morale, Epping and First Edition jumped the I“ st fence almost on terms. High Morale bad charge till nearing the post where first E PP*“§ and then First Edition lodged clalme, and the verdict went to First Edition, with the other pair dead-heating. . .Skyhawk showed that he is a tnuch im proved horse by outclassing the Havelock Handicap field, to whom he was conceding from a stone to nearly two stone. He was soon in front and had clear charge turning for home, where Royal Heir made a run at him. but Skyhawk had a lot in recerve. and half-way down the straight he opened up a big gap. Atkins was P ulll ““ him up before he got to the post, where the margin was still four lengths Inhis favour. Royal Heir was just as easily second ahead of Findon. who drew the outside position and was not prominent tiu th ln C v°iew S of t hfs ee form and the w« ak “ e of the opposition. Opaltown paid fa {se odds to win the Hawkes Bay Stwptechase. Oxyopia and Lucullus Boy led for the first round and then gave way to Malacca. but Opaltown went up to test him about five furlongs from home, and from the half mile the result was not in doubt Opaltown led by two lengths at the last fence and held his margin to the post. Rhodes, who jumped poorly while the early pace was slow, did much better when askeA 'to make up his ground , in the last halfmile. but he spread a plate in the running and dut a foreleg. He was a poor third and pulled up very lame. Queen’s Charm won the Rotopal Hack Handicap with a lot in reserve. Haughty Queen and Nigbtward made the pace for Mr. Valiant and Dashup, with Queens Charm and Roto Parera last, but approaching the straight the two last-named moved up closer, and inside the last furlong Queen’s Charm strode up effortlessly to the lead, and was hard held to beat Haughty Queen by half a length. Roto Parera was three lengths away third Regal Night ran out the distance of the Winter Handicap in solid stylo, to win well from the favourite, Boulder Dam. and Catterick Bridge. Lenardo, Circular Note and Catterick Bridge made play to the straight from Lutanist, Regal ’Night, Boulder Dam and Kinneff. Catterick Bridge, -who had covered a good deal of extra ground, and Regal Night went ahead from the distance, and a little further on Boulder Dam joined issue with them, but at tlie finish Regal Night' w’as doing his work nicely to hold off Boulder Dam by three-quarters of a length, with half a length to Catterick Bridge. The best dividend of the day was returned by tho maiden. Pink Bonnet, when she won the Final Handicap in a battling finish with Kincrop. Pink Bonnet was prominent all the way and trailed Plko Piko and Kinconda to the straight, with Gale Duchesse, Royal Pagennt and Kincrop next. Piko Piko had charge passing the distance, but Pink Bonnet quickly took his measure and then staved off a late rnn by Kincrop to beat him by half a head.
