RADIO & TELEPHONE APPEAL

Tonight’s Arrangements

To facilitate tonight’s appeal for patriotic funds, radio and telephone systems will be linked up throughout New Zealand on a scale far bigger than has ever been previously attempted in this country. The telephone network alone embraces over 200.000 subscribers, and, in addition, about 2000 persons will be immediately concerned with some phase of the appeal as operators, recorders, mechanicians, announcers and other assistants.

A total of 348 telephone exchanges throughout the Dominion will have a part to play, and where the attendance is not continuous the staffs are voluntarily giving up their Saturday night -to assist. A person wishing to contribute will ring the number allotted for his district, and a recorder will take his name and address and the amount of the contribution promised, advising him of the station from which his contribution will be acknowledged. The particulars will be passed on for immediate acknowledgement over the air, and every hour the station will telephone progress reports of the total contributions from the area it is covering to headquarters, 2YA. Wellington, which..in turn, approximately every hour, will give the Dominion total. The appeal will be launched at 6.45 p.m. by his Excellency the GovernorGeneral. In the Wellington province stations 2YA. 2ZB. 2YC. and 2ZA Palmerston North will participate. Wellington city and residents use two telephone numbers—s 6-635 and -10-570. Donations will be acknowledged over 2ZB. Lower Hutt Citv and Petone residents ring 60-181 or 60-231 and listen to 2YC.

Eastbourne and Porirua residents ring their exchange and ask for “Patriotic.” and donations will be acknowledged over 2YC. Ail othei- districts in the Wellington area should do the same, and, their acknowledgements will be over 2YA. The present total for the Wellington appeal is about £34.000, leaving £.>4.000 still to be raised, and it is hoped this will be considerably reduced as a result of tonight's appeal.
