CITY MISSION APPEAL

Sir, —May I, once again, through the courtesy of your paper, make an appeal to my fellow-citizens for financial assistance to the works undertaken by the Wellington City Mission? In these days of continual appeals, I almost hesitate to do this, were it not for the increasing and pressing need of the mission in maintaining its work, but I have more than sufficient faith in my fellow men to know that no genuine appeal for help is ever turned down. Winter is not a season that could be looked forward to by the many old people we endeavour to assist, for sometimes when extra calls are made on the inadequate pension they receive there is little left for the necessaries of life, such as most of us regard as commonplace. Our l family of old people is about 50 a day. and they come to us for what is most probably the only really substantial meal of the day. cooked by a band of ladies who voluntarily undertake this work. And then, too, there are empty hearths here and there; often. we are asked to give help in this direction, and these are only some of the many and varied requests that are day to day made of us. The Boys’ Hostel provides a home for lads of low earnings, many of whom would otherwise be unable to take apprenticeships and situations in the city. Lads are admitted at half their wages; consequently this institution is maintained at quite a sizeable loss. The. unfortunate frequently seek our assistance, and cases of distress,, brought about through no fault of their own and under circumstances over which they have no control—these have to be discreetly relieved .in many ways.

Would yon like to heln us. by sending a contribution to me. care P.O. Box 31, Te Aro. and nil donations, however small, will bo gratefully acknowledged.—l am, etc.—HARRY SQUIRES, Citv Missioner. Wellingtou. June 23
