RUGBY, June 22. A posthumous award of the Victoria Cross has been made to Lance-Corporal Pennington Harman, of the Royal Kent Regiment. While commanding a section of a forward platoon at Kohima, in Burma, last April, he went forward by himself with a grenade and annihilated a machinegun nost which had become a serious menace to his company, and re-, turned to his section with the machinegun.
Early in the following morning he occupied a position on a forward slope 150 yards from the enemy in order to strengthen his platoon, which had been heavily attacked during the night. He discovered a party of the enemy digging in under cover of machinegun fire and snipers. Ordering his Bren gun to give him covering fire, he fixed hi« bayonet and alone charged the post, shooting four of the enemy and bayoneting one. thereby wiping out the post. While walking back Harman received a burst of machinegun fire in his side, and he died shortly after reaching onr lines.
