BITTER FIGHTING
Jap Drive Along CantonHankow Railway CHUNGKING, June 22. The Japanese threat to Hengyang became grave today as the enemy, pushing south along the Canton-Hankow railway, reached a point only 33 miles from Hengyang. A communique said bitter fighting was proceeding at Shiwan, about eight miles north-east of Hangh'an, and 25 miles north of Hengyang. The communique admitted that Siangsiang bad fallen and the enemy had gained ground both east and west of the railway. In Honan the Chinese recaptured Sunghsien, 45 miles south of Loyang, and reached the outskirts of Lonong. Fighting also continues east of the Peip-ing-Hankow railway. The enemy has again entered Chowkaikow.
The blood of soldiers stationed in England is being received by their fellowsoldiers in Normandy. It is flown in transport planes and it is possible for blood to be transferred from donor to patient in less than two hours.
