ANAESTHETIC DRUG

Reference was made in the -cabled news recently to “widespread use of the new drug, pentathal,” by medical units with the invasion troops in Normandy. The medical superintendent of the Wellington Hospital, Dr. J. Cairney. said yesterday that sodium pentathal could hardly he justifiably described as a new drug. It had been in use at the Wellington Hospital at least throughout the war. and was very similar to sodium evipan. which had been in use throughout New Zealand for more than eight years. Sodium pentathal, he explained, was an anaesthetic given by injection into the veins. It was very suitable for short operations, particularly under war conditions, as no complicated apparatus was required. The drug was prepared in ampules and administered quickly and easily by hypodermic .syringe.
