Dates Applied For The Wellington Trotting Club has applied for the following dates for the 194445 season:— Spring meeting—September 9. Summer meeting—February 3. Autumn meeting—April 14 and -1. Applications for dates, are considered at the annual meeting of the Trotting Conference, which will be held in 1' ellington on July 13. Meeting at Addington. The patriotic permit not used by the Wellington Trotting Club this season lias been granted to the Canterbury Park Club, which will hold a mooting at Addington ’on July 1. This meeting will officially .close tl'ic trotting season, which otherwise would have terminated with the running of two light harness events at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s winter meeting at Washd’yko this week. First for Three Years. At a recent meeting at Moonce Valley, the nine-year-old New Zealand-bred gelding Pantoon, owned by J. Fryer, won the Institute Steeplechase.' it was his first win for three and a half years. An account of the race says Pantoon was very weary at the finish, and could hardly last to the post. Though lacking form, there was a wild last-minute plunge on Pantoon, who started favourite. Fryer does not train Pantoon, who is under F. Higgott’s care at Mentone, The first winner at the same meeting was Voltaire, who is trained by Fryer. Voltaire is raced by a daughter of Skipton's owner, and started at double figure odds. Pillar of the Turf. Lord Rosebery, breeder and owner of this year’s Derby winner. Ocean Swell, lias been prominently represented in the Derby for several years. He was second two years ago, with Hyperides, the winner in J 939. with Blue Peter (sire of Ocean Swell), third in 193’2 with Plialeron Bay's threP iinarter brother Miracle, nnd third in 1931 with Sandwich, a halfbrother to Baffles, who Is now in New Zealand. Lord Rosebery lias been a pillar of the thoroughbred breeding industry in England, and as president of the British Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association has done a great deal to protect the Interests of the Industry and the sport of racing throughout the war years.
