NIGHT OF TRIBUTE TO FIGHTING FORCES

Radio & Telephone Appeal On Saturday night a combined radio and telephone appeal in aid of the patriotic funds will be held throughout the Dominion. Subscribers will use the telephone to ring the numbers allotted to their districts, and their promises of contributions will be acknowledged over the air by the broadcasting stations. The secretary of th« National Patriotic Fund Board, Mr. G. A. Hayden, said yesterday that this special appeal would be made as a result of a recommendation at the last national conference of representatives of the provincial patriotic councils and the National Patriotic Fund Board. A similar Dominion-wide appeal, except that the Auckland province was not included, was held about two years ago, and resulted in about £50,000 being raised. The target on Saturday night was £lOO,OOO. The people would be invited to make the occasion a night of tribute to New Zealand fighting men on all fronts. The appeal would be opened at 6.45 p.m. by the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, chairman of the National Patriotic Fund Board. This time had been decided on to enable contributions from children and theatre patrons to be acknowledged, early. After his Excellency’s address, there would be a special introductory programme of a stirring nature. In addition to the acknowledgment of contributions and announcements of provincial totals from the local stations, radio stations would be linked at approximately hourly intervals and the Dominion total given. The National Patriotic Fund Board, said Mr. Hayden, was grateful for the cooperation it had received. Permission for the appeal had been given by the Minister of Broadcasting and the PostmasterGeneral, and members of the staffs of the Broadcasting Service and the Post and Telegraph Department would give their time voluntarily on Saturday night to carry out the arrangements. Business firms with a large number of telephones were helping in certain centres by making their premises available, and in most cases their staffs had volunteered to man the telephones. Patriotic workers would also assist.
