Held By American Troops

(Recei-ed June 21. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, June 21. American troops now hold 1 the entire southern part of Saipan Island from the southern outskirts of Garapan to the centre of the western shore of Maciciente Bay, states a Pacific Fleet communique. Marines and army infantrymen are continuing to advance on the island, closely supported by aircraft, bombing by army and marine artillery and naval gunfire against severe enemy artillery fire. Airfields tn Tinian Island were yesterday bombed by our aircraft and shelled bv our surface units. Tokio official radio quoted a high command admission that the Japanese suffered considerable losses in ships and planes at Saipan where the Americans were attack: ng with a great task force. “The enemy with powerful offensive movements hitherto not existing, is menacing the central Pacific,” the radio said. “If we allow the enemy to construct a base on Saipan, super-Fortresses can reach Japan in oi hours and begin putting pressure on the coastal cities of our homeland.”
