CHANGSHA FALLS
Occupied By Japanese (Received June 21, 10 p.m.) CHUNGKING, June 21. The. Japanese have advanced beyond Changsha southward toward the strategic town of Hengyang, says the Associated Press of America. Should Hengyang fall, the Japanese would be well on the way toward splitting China, establishing an overland railway, and neutralizing a number of Allied air-bases. The Japanese have also advanced in north Honan, recapturing the highway
centre of Chowchiakow, south-east of Chengchow, and taking Shantsai. A Chinese communique acknowledged that Changsha had fallen and had been occupied by the enemy. The situation became obscure after the destruction of the suburban defence works by 50.090 Japanese, the communique said. Tokio official radio quoted an Imperial Headquarters announcement that the Japanese occupied Changsha on Sunday, and that the mopping up of enemy remnants in and round the city was still proceeding. Reporting tho capture of Liling, the radio claimed that 15 Chinese divisions had been annihilated in the present Hunan campaign.
