MORE PROGRESS

Allies Push On Past Perugia TORRENTIAL RAIN (By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright.) LONDON. June 21. In spite of torrential rain, Eighth Army troops have made some progress beyond Perugia. 129 miles north-west of Rome. Allied bombers attacked an aircraftcarrier in Genoa harbour and others went to Albania. Rain and heavy demolitions have hampered the troops on the Adriatic sector, but after crossing the Tronto River they have now reached'the Saturno River. Our troops further westward had advanced yesterday to the southern shores of Lake di Chuisi, near the town of Chuisi. The Fifth Army had advanced to the north of Grosseto and Monteamiata (eight miles west of Radicofani). A leftist military organization, Armaia Rossa (Red Army), has been formed in Rome, and asked the Allied commands for permission to fight against the Germans in Italy, says the Associated Press Rome correspondent. The organization claims 58,000 recruits. Headquarters of Armaia Rossa states that the army was formed because the King and Marshal Badoglio had failed to create an effective fighting force. Pro-Allied Italians hold three passes leading to France, says reports from the Swiss frontier. These passes are the Little St. Bernard, the Monte Genevre, and the Col de Larche. Possession of the passes would facilitate the passage of the Fifth and Eighth Armies from Italy into southern France. SOLDIERS CHEER POPE (Received Juno 21, 7.5 p.m.) LONDON June 20. Four thousand British soldiers, mostly Roman Catholics, cheered the Pope when he reviewed them at the Vatican. The Pope addressing the men said: “It is a real joy for us to welcome you all here. Our paternal heart has at times been almost overwhelmed by the sorrows of our children. You are of those children and we have prayed for you. We have blessed you all and all your dear ones at home.”
