SHOOTING SEASON
Extension Not Allowed
The Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry, has replied to a request by the Wellington Acclimatization Society, that the shooting of native game be allowed for one more weekend in June, that he can(not consider the application favourably. Mr. Parry, stated in a letter received, at a meeting of the council of the society last night that the change would be a complete break in the policy of giving the ducks tjie opportunity of early mating, which the short season had established, and also it was questionable whether there was legal authority for the request to be granted. The society’s request was made following a discussion at its. annual meeting, during which it was said shooting had been poor because of the fair weather, and that it was necessary to reduce excessive duck population over-crowding the feeding grounds. The council decided to forward to the next conference of acclimatization ' societies a remit based oh a recommendation by the Palmerston North sub-com-mittee that property owners’ right to shoot on their own properties without licences be made non-transferable.
