SUNDAY SCREENING OF PICTURES

Discussion At Petone An application by the Hutt Valley St. John Ambulance Brigade for permission to screen a picture on Sunday evening, in aid of its funds, resulted in a brief discussion at the Petone Borough Council meeting this week ou the exhibition of pictures on Sunday. ' Or. V. E. Jacobsen moved that the request be not granted on the ground that it was an encroachment on the day of rest and a wrong use of a day set aside for religious observance. The motion was seconded by the mayor, Mr. H. Green, who considered the holding of a picture show was not quite on all fours even with permits previously granted. He had previously opposed Sunday concerts and considered such permits were the thin end of the wedge which would destroy Sunday observance. Crs. J. Huggan. J. T. Carr, E. K. London, R. Fox, A. A. Anderson, A. G. Steffensen, and A. M. Macfarlaue supported the granting of the permit, stressing the good work done by the St. John Ambulance. The permit was granted, the mayor and Cl'. Jacobsen dissenting.
