Rayner Outpoints Brown
Crafty ring tactics and better condition gave the veteran, -Clarrie Rayner (Blenheim), a points deciaion over Billie Brown (Southland) in the professional lightweight boxing match at the Labour Hall. Petone, last night. A large crowd appreciated the hard, clean fighting, - there being practically no holding. , . ’ Brown scaled Ost. 91b., giving him, a three-pound advantage in weight. The opening rounds were brisk, Brown leading with a jabbing lofts keeping Rayner wearing and ducking. Solid blows were landed by both men. Rayner s experienced ringcraft was apparent; he was making the (Southlander miss widely. Brown kept coming, and in the tniru. round he cut Rayner’s cheek with a heavy right. Rayner took things fairly easily, and contented himself with the defensive, but occasionally attacked with a saddea rush that kept his opponent wary. Brown Scored several times with quick punches, trying, sometimes successfuly, for Rayner’s cut cheek. Rayner saw his opponent was tiring by the seventh round, and increased the pace, landing blows to the body and face with both hands. In the eighth round be ent Brown’s eye- . , The Southlander fought cleverly, but the strain was telling. Rayner landed several hard punches and was still attacking when the final bell went. The verdict was the only possible one, but Brown 8 fast, clean punching against the wily veteran deserved every praise. Mr L. Stewart was the referee, and Messrs. Keats (Martins), 11.6, and J. Parara (Porlrua), 11.1& fought to a draw. It was a popular decision. Clever infighting' and aggressiveness gained G. Elliott (Heretaunga), 9.5, the decision ov»r J. Brandon (Kailways), 9.6. A damaging left which was continually finding its mark on his opponent s face, gained E. Parker (Air Force) 11.4. a clearcut decision over L. Williams (Hed* bergs). 11.4. in a hard fight. Shrewder tactics and a longer reach enabled T. Anderson (Martin’s), 7.12. to beat A. Johnson (City Mission). 8.2, in a spirited bout. Wild punching marked the bout in whichir. Noonan (Martins), 7.4, beat P. Quin (City Mission), 7.1, the crowd appreciating the willingnees shown by both boys. Plenty of spirit and little science gained roarsl of approval from the crowd when C. O Regan (Martins), 5.7. and E. Pllsher (Railways), 5.7. fought a draw, a shower of pennies being thrown into the ring. Mr. L. Cleverly was the referee.
