CHANGSHA BY-PASSED

(Received June 18, 7.40 p.m.) CHUNGKING, June 17. The Chinese High Command has disclosed that the Japanese are by-passing Changsha and are threatening Lukow, 30 miles southward. The fall of Lukow would open the way.for a Japanese push to Hengyang, where the railway from Kwangsi south-westward meets the Can-ton-Hankow line. The Chinese have recaptured Junan, an important road junction. The Japanese have taken Suiping, reducing the 'Chinese-held gap in the Peiping-Hankow; railway to under 45 miles. The Chinese communique reports heavy fighting in the south-eastern suburbs of Changsha, where the Chinese garrison is obeying General Chiang Kaishek's orders to defend the city at all costs.
