ADMIRAL HALSEY
New Zealand Hospitality Appreciated Appreciation of the friendly reception given him by the people of New Zealand during his recent visit to the Dominion is expressed by Admiral Halsey. U.S.N., who has just relinquished command of the South Pacific area, in a letter to the Acting-Prime Minister, Mr. Sullivan. The Admiral’s letter is as follows:— “I should like at this time to thank you, and through you all the people of New Zealand, for the splendid hospitality extended to me and to my party on our recent visit to your delightful country. I cannot help but feel —and with a great sense of satisfaction —that the cordiality shown to us. and the high honour conferred on me. were but an extension, of the same magnificent friendliness New Zealand has always displayed to all the American servicemen who have visited you. “These open-handed, hearty attributes so universally found in your countrymen were not born of war. I know, but merely gained impetus from it. I shall look forward to visiting New Zealand again in happier times, and to an everlasting friendship between our two nations.” “I feel sure that the people throughout the Dominion will note with pleasure the warm friendliness of the distinguished Admiral’s appreciative letter,” said Mr. Sullivan, “and will join him in hoping that ■ the unity and reciprocal goodwill between the United States and New Zealand in wartime will strengthen into abiding friendship in times of peace.”
