One Of The Most Decorated New’Zealand Pilots One of the most decorated New Zealand pilots of this war. Acting Wing Commander James Fraser Barron; D. 5.0., D.F.C., D.F.M., R.N.Z.A.F., of Palmerston South, has been awarded a Bar to the Distinguished Service Order, according to advice received by the Air Department, Wellington, from Londoji. The citation accompanying the awaxd states, that one night last month Wing Commander Barron participated in an attack on an airfield at Nantes. By his appreciation of the responsibilities entrusted to him. mid the skill and .precision with which he executed his attack, he contributed in a large measure to the success achieved. Since being awarded the D.S.O. he had taken part in many attacks on dangerous and difficult targets. “He is an outstanding captain,” the citation continues, “whose example of skill, bravery and determination has impressed all.”
Wing Commander Barron, who is -3 years of agu, was born in Dunedin, and received his primary education at Dlaheno. After spending four years at the Waitaki Boys’ High School, he entered the Public Service with the Mines Department in Wellington. He enlisted in the R.N.Z.A.F. and began his training under the Empire Scheme in July. 1940, being commissioned in the rank of Pilot Officer in March. 1942. Wihg Commander Barron is a son of ‘Mr. J. Barron, of Palmerston South.
