GIFTS FOR LEPERS
Recently the general public of New Zealand through the agency of the Lepers’ Trust Board sent, gifts to the value of £5OO to the 435 lepers of all creeds and colours in New Caledonia. The goods were distributed through the British Consul and a very touching scene was witnessed when the presents were handed out as a ‘‘goodwill token” from the Dominion. The following extract is taken from a newspaper in New Caledonia. "It was a truly moving spectacle to see these poor disinherited folk. How many faces showing signs of suffering were brightened by a smile of gratitude. With cries of ‘Long live New Zealand’ the poor patients with laden arms desired to thank those who had in the goodness of their hearts wished to cheer them, to bring them a little Comfort in the hard calvary they were bearing with resignation, For one day the patients were gay—-they had forgotten their pains and suffering. They had been thought of fur away in the country of New Zealand.”
