TROTTING NOTES

Annual Yearling Sale To Be Founded An annual national sale of trotting yearlings on similar lines to the annual thoroughbred sale at Trentham is to bo established this year and will be held at Christchurch on the Friday preceding New Zealand Trotting Cup day. The sponsors of the sale are Wright, Stephenson and Co. and H. Matson and Co. Nursery Stakes. Admiration won the Tlmaru Nursery Stakes after leading Worthy Gold and Czardas all the waj> these three having the race to themselves after they settled down. Admiration, though a smart, reli, able filly, found the mile far enough, while Worthy Gold also lacked a finishing effort. Czardas had his preparation interrupted, but is all right again, so he may do better over t»he longer journey in the Ashburton Sapling Stakes. Bohemnlan had his chance ruined by interference at the start. Admiration, a sister to Coquette and Bonny Bridge, aud a half-sister to Bayard and Captain Morant, was purchased last year by Mr. J. Aitcheson. Otago. Matinee at Roydon. In connexion with a sale of brood mares and two.j»-ear-olde at Roydon Lodge next Saturday, Mr. J. li. McKenzie has arranged to hold a matinee meeting on his private track, the proceeds to help the funds of the Yaldhurst School. The programme includes a race for two-year-olds, an allaged stakes, and a match between a trotter and a pacer—Highland Scott and Gerfalcon. An event for women riders and a galloping race for licensed jockeys will also be a part of the programme. A parade of stallions and brood mares will also be staged. Fremont Retiring. Fremont, who has only won £4O in stakes thi s year, is to be retired for stud purposes. This American-bred stallion has records of 2.7, 3.14 1-5 aud 4.19 1-5 to his credit. Ashburton Prospect. One of the likeliest maiden pacers to see out two miles at Ashburton next month is Red Ace, a four-year-old roan gelding by Red Shadow from Katute. Double Gaited. The performance of Silver Plane at Claudelands in running as a pacer and trotter in the same afternoon appears unique. Imposter and a few others won at both gaits the same day, but they first succeeded in a trotting race. Silver Plane won her first race at Hamilton as a hoppled pacer, and, reverting to the trot, won, again. Men of long experience at (lie sport maintain that it is much different to get a double-gaited horse to trot solidly wltliln a few hours of pacing in hopples, as Silver Plane did with such distinction. Silver-Plane is by Peter Bingen from Ilai Lady and is a full-sister to the useful pacer Ranfurly Lass. Peter Bingen was originally tried at the trotting gait, but it wits as a pacer that he did best, winning the New Zealand Cup two years in succession aud a free-for-nil. Transport by Sea. Most of tlie Itieearton trainers with horses engaged at tlie thrcc-day Dunedin meeting nrn making iiri-angeinehts to eeutl tlielr charges to tlie meeting by sea from Lyttelton.
