Woolcott Forbes Case ((Received May 23, 11 p.m-) .... u SYDNEY, Muy JoJohn Woolcott Forbes, who was convicted on nine charges in connexion with transactions in shpre certificates, ' vab 1 day refused a new trial by the Stat Full Court. The grounds of the appn cation were (1) that the indictment .vas bad because it. was tiled bv the C l ™’ Prosecutor and not by the AttomiJ-Ge i oral; (2) that the evidence of Forbes s convictions in America bad been "ioii„ ly admitted; and (3) that in view of • juror’s statement that he had been oft- . a bribe, a new trial should be grant.d. “If a new trial were granted as a right simply because a juryman sa.d had been offered a bribe, it would mean that no rogue with sufficient money 01 sufficient influence need ever allow linnself to be convicted.” said the (. hief JU*; lice. Sir Frederick Jordan. 'Hie Clret Justice added that there was no suggestion in tliis ease that lhe juryman was influenced by the offer of abrW or that Forbes had been responsible lor offering it.
