Acquisition Of Land At Auckland

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 22. An area of about 120 acres at Tamtiki is at present being acquired as n site for a university. An important step toward this objective was made tonight whqn the Auckland Hospital Board agreed to sell to the Department of Housing Construction approximately 28 acres at a cost of £1750. The action to acquire the land follows negotiations between the Govern men t and the council of the Auckland University College. The site, is pear Glen Innes railway station, and has a frontage to Point ‘England Road. Glen Innes is about five miles from the city by rail.

Details of the scheme were given in a letter received by the board from the department. The letter said that in the planing of large areas to be developtd by the department provision was made for land to he set aside for recreation, education and other public purposes ns might be required. “The council of the Auckland University College has approached. the department with the request that sufficient land in Tnmaki be made available as a site for a university, and agreement has been reached that the area fronting Point England Road and extending from the railway to mid including the board's land would be suitable for the- purpose.” the letter added. “Three properties will be involved. The department is milking available the area next to the railway line. A firm offer to sell has been secured from the adjoining private owner, mid the board's land is required to complete the proposals. In reality the provision of the university forms part of the department's, development scheme, and could be achieved by the department acquiring the land from the board mid transferring it to the university council, it was stated. The writer understood that the council was willing to proceed with the acquisition as .soon as the necessary preliminaries were completed. On the recommendation of its finance committee the Hospital Board decided to sell the land subject to the approval of the Minister of Health and subject to the existing lease.
