NEW RUSSIAN PATRIARCH
(British Official Wireless.) (Received May 22, 8 pan.) RUGBY. May 21. The Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church in Russia elected Alexei. Metropolitan of Leningrad and Novgorod, ns Patriarch, on May U», thereby conforming with the testament, of the late Patriarch, slates a Moscow message. Loyalty to the Russian Orthodox Church and the Soviet Government was declared by the Patriarch in a letter to Marshal Stalin. Alexei undertook to work in complete unity with the Church Council and the Holy Synod as a guarantee against mistakes and false steps. The new Patriarch, who was born in 1877, was m Leningrad throughout the entire blockade and was awarded the Government medal "for the defence of Leningrad.”
