CONVEYED HOME
Indians Trick Japanese (Received May 22. 8 p.m.) LONDON. May 22. A party of 12 Indian soldiers consisting of commissioned officers and N.C.O.’s whom the Japanese took prisoners in Malaya were in March landed from an enemy submarine on the Indian coast with an order to carry out espionage for the Japanese. The whole party immediately gave themselves up to the authorities, says the Delhi correspondent of “The Times.” quoting an official statement. The Japanese for a year had trained the Indian soldiers in sabotage, demolition and wireless transmission,. The soldiers on arrival at Delhi handed over equipment and money the Japanese had given them. The Japanese for reserve- funds had also given them a few diamonds which were likewise handed over. The statement says that the men never had the slightest intention of carrying out the enemy’s orders, but pretended compliance in order to get back to India.
