ABBEY LU WINS STEEPLECHASE
Hurdles To Emdale GOOD RACING AT TE RAPA Dominion Special Service. AUCKLAND, May 21. Perfect weather favoured the Waikato Racing Club's winter meeting at Te Rapa on Saturday, and there was some excellent racing on a track that was slightly holding. All the winners were well supported except Gunman, who paid double fißures when lie won the first division of thc Otorohanga Hack Handicap. , It. was with a strong finishing ru n that tne topweight, Erndale, won the Ha'nilton Hurdles, in which he was having his flist race over fences since he ran third 111 li t Grand National Hurdles in IJ4-. Erndale was handily placed most ot the waJ ’ and he held a forward position 'vhen Sumk Exchange and Gold Cape moved ui> to take the lead from the pacemakers, sir Grant and Hunting Mac, before reaching the home turn. Gold Cape held a slight advantage from Stock Exchange till made a poor jump at the last fence, where Erndale joined issue with them. Lru “ a ‘? finished best to win by n bead from Gold Cape, who defeated Stock Exchange I > half a length. Wildore battled on to be a moderate fourth, followed by Sir Grant, Besiege, Our Nation. Hunto, laruna and Hunting Mac. The form of the place-get-ters was good, aud they are all likely, to advance in favour tor the Great Northern Hurdles as a result. Gold Cape ™lbbt have wop it’ be had jumped the last ten - cleanly. Our Nation was never dangeious. and Hunto was always well back. The win favourite. Tweed-smuir, scored a very decisive victory in the I resident s Handicap. After -being well Placetl throughout, Tweedsmuir folowed BMdonua, Billy Peach aud Constitution into the straight, and then shot to the front to win by two lengths from Constitution, who fought on gamely. Marble I’ ox came home well from a loug way back to be three-quarters of a length away Hurd, and throughout, Tweedsmuir followed Skydouna. Kinsman. Billy Peacn and Night Comedy. Tweedsmuir won too well tor any excuses to be made for the others, though Marble Fox appeared a shade uuluckv. The place-getter s are all engaged in the Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie. The favourites Surpeen and Abbey Lu, had a great tusa-e in the Te Rapa Steeplechase, Abbey Lu staying the better to win bv two lengths. Surpeen, who shared the pacemaking with Winning T . ra y, and Ab-bov Lu were together in front over the last, three fences, and It was only in the last 100 yards that Abbey Lu gained the ascendancy. Hcssketoon ran a stayer’s race for thirl], and The Cardinal, who looked like being very dangerous with a mile to go, was fourth, followed by Chat, Kinkle, Royal Jay, Dividend and Gay Movie. Chat was finishing on, being closer at the end than at any other stage, and she gained friends for the Great Northern Steeplechase. Alnbev Lu and Surpeen are verv fit. but. Dividend, who performed creditably, and The Cardinal may both improve in condition in the next fortnight, specially Dividend. Bronzemor, the early leader, 'Winning Tray, Aintree and Advance Plane fell. In a useful field of open class horses, a hack. Colonel Vaals, was- made favourite for the Stewards’ Handicap, and he justified the support by winning handsomely. Hunting Camp opened up a lead of six lengths in the first half-mile, and he led into the straight clear of Bonny Pay and Sir Dingle, who were the first to go after him. With a furlong to go Hunting Camp collapsed, and just when Bonny Pay appeared likely to win Colonel Vaals flashed up with a brilliant run on the outside and won going away by tiVo lengths. Sir Dingle battled on solidly to be another two lengths away third and Prince Baffles was fourth ahead of Taku Kara, Bunting Camp, Golden (Survey and Betterman. The totalizator handled £73,’001, compared with £73,097 last year, an increase of £454. Results;—
