COAL WAGE AGREEMENT
(Received May 21, 9.50 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 20. After a controversy lasting a year involving four general strikes, the AN ar Labour Board has approved the wage agreement between Mr. Lewis, president of the United Mineworkers’ Association, and 70 per cent, of the bituminous coal operators, which will probably result in the withdrawal of Government control of the bituminous mines. The contract follows the pattern of the Governmental agreement with the anthracite miners, providing a daily wage of eight dollars 50 cents, including portal to portal pay. Today's decision also offers a flat payment of 40 dollars for p.hh miner for the settlement of retro-active travel pay claims. However, the dispute is not yet ended, because the southern Appalachian operators, representing 30 per cent, of the industry, refused to sign the contract, do* daring they will test? the case iu court.
