GERMAN ROUT IN SOUTH
Third Defence Line Ahead LONDON May J». The Allied High Command spokesman declared today that the American and French blows south of the Liri Valley have forced the Germans into a disorderly retreat instead of a mere withdrawal, 'lhe Germans are abandoning quantities of heavy equipment which the Allies so far had had no time to sort out. There is also considerable disorganization in the Liri Valley, but not so complete as in the more southerly sector. As a sign of enemy disintegration, he instanced the abandonment of divisional artillery by two German divisions retreating through the mountains.. There are indications that behind the Hitler Line, north and south of the Liri River, the Germans have prepared a switch line running south-west from Pontecorvo in a straight line over the hills through Fondi to Terracina [says a British Official Wireless dispatch]. The German forces radio, broadcasting to the troops in Italy, told them they must fight to the last shell aud go in with the bayonet, if necessary.
