Referendum On Suburban Licences (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, May 19. A decision to take a referendum ou the question of the establishment of hotels in. the suburbs —a hotly-debated subject in Invereargill at present—was made at a special meeting of the city council this afternoon. The referendum will be taken on (May 27, the date of the civic elections. Tlie council reached its decision after hearing a deputation from-a committee set up at a meeting on Tuesday to prepare a case against hotels in the suburbs. Tlie deputation offered Jo meet the cost of taking the referendum if the council granted its request.. Cr. W. H. Boyes said that, as a member of the trust, he would welcome a referendum. It would take the responsibility off the trust. Cr. G. B. Orbell said he had voted against liquor in the suburbs, but they were overruled at a meeting of tbe trust. The trust had been far from unanimous on the question. . ~ The town clerk. Mr. W. 1. Sturman, said that the referendum would have no legal effect. It could be used as evidence in the Supreme Court.
