“STAGE DOOR CANTEEN”

(Fourth week).—An American critic, less beguiled by "Stage Door Canteen” (King's) than I was. had some observations to make about the film with which I do not agree, but which might be re-, printed in the interests of free criticism; "All-star variety shows have very seldom worked out on stage, screen or radio. The reason for this could best be discovered and expounded by someone with the Rockefeller Foundation behind him, but at a glance the most important factor would appear to be the overabundance of talent. A producer becomes intrigued by the fancy names at his disposal, and persuades himself that they are all he needs. -It doesn't mater to him what material they've got as long as they do something. The real Stage Door Canteen is probably a pleasanter place to visit than screen Canteen because the talent is served in smaller quantities, and a grand old man of the theatre, working as a busboy, doesn’t have to do a bit. from Shakespeare just because he’s there.” Be that as it may, and not surfeited like the Now York critic with good things in the flesh, I still think "Stage Door Canteen" one of the pleasantest and most entertaining films that has arrived iu Wellington in a long time.
