LESS BROADCASTING
Further Reduction By One Hour BeforcNoon A further reduction in broadcasting hours was announced yesterday in a joint statement by the Minister of Supply and Munitions, Mr. Sullivan, and the Minister of Broadcasting, Mr. Jones. As from Monday all broadcasting stations will close between 11 a.m. and noon daily, from Mondays to Fridays, inclusive. With the existing silent periods on these days, 8.15 a.m. to 8.45 a.m., and 5.15 p.m. to 5.45 p.m broadcasting hours will be reduced by two hours daily on five days of the week The Ministers said that this further reduction was necessary on account of the increasing demands for electric power, “Already last year’s peak has been exceeded,” they said, “and the general tendency will be for the load to increase still further, particularly during the next few months. As the midday peak normally ocours between 11 a.m. and 12 noon. >t will be readily appreciated that savings in electricity will bo most effective by reducing the hours of broadcasting over this period. The need for economizing in the-use of electricity cannot be overemphasized, and it is hoped that all listeners will co-operate by switching 'off their receiving sets during the periods when the broadcasting stations are closed. "This further reduction now reduces the hours of broadcasting by two hours daily, Mondays to Fridays inclusive, and it is expected that these reductions will effect a considerable saving in electricity. The actual effect which the reduction in broadcasting is having on the system load is not yet available, but the indications are that there is a definite saving in consumption.”
