CASSINO ROAD
Cut By British Tanks NEW PROSPECT OPENS (Received May 19, 12.25 a.m.) LONDON, May IS. The German announcement of the evacuation of the town of Casslno has been followed swiftly by a .dispatch from the British United Press correspondent -with the Eighth Army reporting that British tanks are on Highway G beyond Cassino. Armoured reconnaissance forces crossed the road in two.places 3| and.miles respectively beyond Cassino, and infantry forces at nightfall yesterday were moving in to consolidate the barriers and thus close the trap on the German garrison to the east. Reuter’s correspondent says that the fall of Cassino-opens up the prospect of a new break-through move by the British and Polish forces to Rome. Before announcing the evacuation the German news agency stated that Kesselring was at present on the Cassino front, where he was taking charge of the operations. The British United Press correspondent at advanced Allied headquarters says the Eighth Array spearheads after capturing Pignataro have joined up with a. French column which entered the Liri Valley from San Giorgio, and the combined force has begun a powerful attack toward the Adolf Hitler Line.
