SUBMARINE RESCUES U.S. AIRMEN

(Received May 18, 11.35 p.m.) NEW YORK, May IS. The United States submarine Tang arrived at Pacific Fleet headquarters carrying 22 flight officers and airmen rescued from the sea during the two-day strike by the task force against Truk in April, reports the "New York Times” Pearl Harbour correspondent. Tho Tang while on patrol received a radio message to attempt the rescue of the airmen. The Tang moved cautiously through reefy waters, skirted island shore batteries, paused once to chase an enemy submarine, mid then ran back and forth along the entire southern range of tile island group collet-ting the company of airmen who otherwise would have drifted out to sea or fallen into Japanese hands.
