UNION WITH U.S.A.
Newspaper’s Proposal To Pacific Dominions NEW YORK. May 15. “Reports indicate that the London Prime Ministers’ conference has not given sufficient attention to the fact that the United States went to' war as one man the moment the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour. Our Allies across the Pacific might do well to bear that circumstance in mind.” says the “Chicago Tribune”, in an editorial. The newspaper adds: “If Australia and New Zealand want to fed sure of United States support against some future aggressor-—history suggests that no great reliance can be placed on the Nine Power Treaty or a similar document —their best bet is to get into the American Union. Thou, if Australia or New Zealand territory is attacked the response of this country’s people will be as prompt and impressive as the reaction to Pearl Harbour. “It is not likely that America will invite tile Dominions across the Pacific to join the Union, but if the idea attracts these nations there is nothing, to hinder them from applying for admission. If they do, their chances of being accepted are good. . , , . , “There would be no social obstacles such as would make a union of Britain and America difficult. Australia, like America, is populated by people of humble origin. Many thousands of American soldiers have made friends m Australia."
