MANPOWER CONTROLS
To Cease In Australia When War Ends GOVERNMENT ASSURANCE (By Telegraph,—Press Assn. —Copyright.) (Received May 16, 10.45 p.m.) SYDNEY. May 16. Australian manpower controls will cease when the war ends, ami every man and woman will be free to choose his or her own job. There will be ao industrial conscription, but at the same time jobs will be found for servicemen and civilian workers. ’ This assurance was given this afternoon by tlie Acting-Prime Minister, Air. Fordq, replying to criticism of growth of bureaucratic control and government by regulation in Australia. “.Some critics of wartime regulations fear they will remain in existence after the war,” said Mr. Forde. "I say emphatically that this will not be the case. The Government stands for freedom of the individual and for Ministerial control, and after the war the mass of regulations designed for winning the war will be swept away.” Air. Forde added that all wartime regulations were now being reviewed by the Attorney-General, Dr. Evatt, and his department and just as soon as the war position permitted regulations would be amended and relaxed.
