READY TO SPRING
Vast Japanese Trap Seen (Received May 14. 10.30 p.m.) CHUNGKING, May 14. Chinese hopes of holding Loyang faded rapidly when Japanese troops, using 200 tanks, reached a point two miles from the city, reports, the American 'Associated Press. The Japanese now appear ready to spring a vast trap, threatening several hundred thousand Chinese hemmed in by enemy columns from the Mienchin sector and from points east and south of Loyang. The importance of this campaign is emphasized by the announcement that General Shunroku Ha'ta, Commander-in-Chief of the Japanese forces in. China, has arrived on the Honan front.
A Chinese communique states that bitter fighting raged in the south-eastern outer defences of Loyang on Thursday and Friday. Casualties were heavy on both sides. The enemy broke into Mienchin on Friday and bitter lighting is proceeding. -
