N.Z. SHIPBUILDING

Cargo Vessels For U.S.A. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, May 12. The shipbuilding controller, Mr. J. Fletcher, announced tonight that a contract for eight cargo vessels for the United States Navy had been placed with Stevenson and Cook, Port Chalmers, and the first two keels had been laid. These eight ships were part of a contract for 32, the remainder of which were being constructed in Auckland. “It’ is interesting to note, Mr. Fletcher added, “that 75 ocean-going vessels have been built in New Zealand during the past two years.”
