OBITUARY

Mr. W. A. O. Harte Mr. William Alfred .Oliphant Harte. Clerk of the Court, Napier, and Registrar of the Supreme Court, died at Napier Public Hospital on Thursday evening. Mr. Harte was born at Winchester, South Canterbury, iu ISBS and was educated’in the South Canterbury district. He entered the Justice Department over 40 years ago at Dannevirke, aud subsequently served at Balclutha, Timaru. Christchurch, Oamaru, Masterton and Wanganui and had relieved at numerous other places in the Dominion. Going to Napier as clerk of the Court, in September. 1039. Mr. Harte served there up to the time of his death. His chief sporting interest was Rugby, and in his youth he played for Central Hawke’s Bay. but upon transfer to the South Island he turned his attention to tlia administrative side of the game, and for many years was' president of the South Canterbury Rugby Union. He was deeply interested in cricket and tennis and a large number of trophies for sport testify his enthusiasm and ability. Mr. Harte was also interested iu literacy work, and for some considerable time he compiled the literary page in the Christchurch “iSta.r Sun.” He also acted as bonk reviewer'for (hat newspaper. He leaves a widow, three sons, Geoff (with the Second N.Z.E.F. in Italy). William and Jack (Napier) aud throe sisters, Mrs. G. V. Cochrane (Christchurch). and Misses M. and L. Harte (Timaru).

Mr. E. Broad

The death occurred in the Waipukurau Hospital on Wednesday of a well-known resident of Central Hawke’s Bay, Mr. Evelyn Broad, at the age of <4 years. Mr. Broad had been in indifferent health for some time. Born on the West Coast, he was the second son of the late Mr. Charles Broad, who was resident magistrate in that district. Educated on the West Const and at the Wangailui Collegiate School. Mr. Broad joined the staff of the Colonial Bank, later transferring to the Bank pf New Zealand. Eventually he became manager of the bank in a number of country towns. He arrived m Waipukurnu as branch manager in 1912 and retired in 1930. In his younger days, Mr. Broad was an enthusiast at rowing, tennis and hiking. He climbed Mt. Egmont on several occasions. Mr. Broad is sur vived by his wife, Mrs. E. E. Broad, oue son. Sergeant John Broad, who is serving with the N.Z.E.F. in Italy, and a sister, Mrs. J. G. Oldham, Taihape.
