Felous And Airway At Grange Stud

Two English-bred stallions arrived at The Grange Stud, Westmere, this week. Felous, iby .Solario from Coin of the Realm, has been purchased by Mr. li. K. Bennett, proprietor of The Grange Stud, and Airway, by Fairway from Udaipur, whose ownership has not been disclosed, is to remain at The Grange in the meantime. They were acquired on behalf of their New Zealand owners by the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd. Felous was foaled in 1938 and is a bay horse, lie won twice as a three-year-old at a mile and a half and a mile and seven furlongs, and was beaten narrowly into second place in the Yorkshire Stakes (one and a half miles) by Orthodox, winner of the Newmarket Stakes. Felous ran in the St. Leger, finishing eighth in front of the Derby’ winner, Owen Tudor, and the Two Thousand Guineas winner, Lambert Simnel. Coin of the Realm, dam of Felous. was by Phalaris from.Plack, who won the One Thousand Guineas for Lord Rosenbery and was dam of Afterthought, ouc of the best tlllies in England in 19-12.

Descends From Quiver. Airway, like Beau Pere and Mr. Standfast. descends from Quiver. His dam, Udaipur, wou the Oaks, and her dam, Uganda, won the French Oaks and bred Ukrania (French Oaks), Ut Majeur (Cesarewitch) and Umidwar (Jockey Club Stakes, and now one of the leading, sires In England). Airway is a half-brother to Umdidad, who ran a second in the 1943 Derby. Airway did not race till his three-year-old season and finished fourth !u his only start. As a four-year-old he won twice in Ireland at a mile and a mile and a half.

Completed Apprenticeship. T. P. Biggs, who has completed his apprenticeship with H. B. Lorigan. has_ been granted a jockey's licence, and he will be riding at Otakl tomorrow. Consistent.

Fourth at his last start over seven furlongs, Broiefleld, who has had two wins, three seconds, a third and two fourths in nine starts this season, is likely to .be well supported in the Te Horo Hack at Otakl tomorrow. He has won at six and seven furlongs, and his second to Lady Spiral over a mile at Trentham in January would indicate his ability to see out the mile and 55 yards at Otaki.

Jockey's Operation. Jockey H. N. Wiggins underwent a slight operation on an eye last week, and he has now left a private hospital In Auckland. Wiggins will not ride at the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s winter meeting at Te Aroha tomorrow, but he will be at the Waikato Racing Club’s winter meeting at Te Rapa on May 20. Stables Purchased.

The deal by which the Matamata trainer J. W. Cathro was to have taken over J. H. Wallace's establishment at Takanlnl has fallen through and Cathro has now purchased the late E. T. Reid’s stbles at Te Rapa. Doubly Engaged. The Salmagundi—Spean Bridge mare Salmi claims two engagements at the Poverty Bay meeting tomorrow. She is topweight with 9.2 in the Junction Hack Handicap, six furlongs, and also appears in the last race, the open seven, with 7.2. Salmi has not won since her victory by six lengths in a hack sprint at Stratford on New Year's Day. Her last start was in the President’s Handicap, seven furlongs, at the Waikato meeting on April 29. when she was running on Into fifth place. Her most serious opponent in the hack race tomorrow may be Colonol Vaals au easy winner over seven furlongs among the hacks at Waikato.

Colts Named. Corineiis is the name bestowed on the Lang Bian—Love of Silver colt purchased by Mr. T. Impey, at the national sales, while the Robin Goodfellow—Falcon colt will be known as Klug's Pride. Both are inmates of F. Smith's stable, which Is having a quiet time at the moment, with only Cambria, Yorkish and Cornish for winter racing.

May Improve. Tarzah, topweight wiXJi 8.9 in the Secami Trial Handicap at the Poverty Bay meeting, will be having his fourth start this season. At his last outing he was second to Colonel Vaals over seven furlongs, finishing from behind, but had no chance with the winner, who romped home by six lengths. Chevalita, who has run three thirds in her last six starts, is due for a win, and Odvaals, narrowly beaten Into third in a division of the Dominion Handicap at the Avondale meeting, should run well again.

Flahuluk to Reappear. Flahuluk. who Is down to contest the Otakl Hack Handicap tomorrow, has not appeared in public since he won the Meula Champion Hack, one mile, one furlong, at Otakl last October. On that occasion he carried 8.4. and bgat Gothic by throe lengths. The distance tomorrow is two furlongs shorter and Flahuluk has gone up 101 b. He would be better for a strong rider, but the Otakl Hack is for apprentice riders.

Neenah* for Hurdling? An interesting entry in the Seddon Hack Hurdles at the Waikato meeting at Te Rapa on May 20, is Neenah, who has been given top weight, 11.5, by Mr. W. P. Russell. Neenah in 12 starts this season has had two wins, a second, two thirds and three fourths, and has proved himself at distances from six to 11 furlongs. He has not started over hurdles. but on the strength of his flat form is asked to give weight to such proved hurdlers as Borak and Our Nation. The Foxbridge gelding has also been nominated for the Stewards’ Handicap, seven furlongs, in which he has 9.5. 31b. less than the topweight Landveyor.

Novice Steeplechaser. The seven-year-old Flying Priuce gelding Flylite, who has been entered for the Great Northern Steeplechase at Ellerslie next month, has shown encouraging form over the big fences. At Ellerslie on April 8 he finished third in the Mangere Steeplechase to The Dozer and Bisquit, aud two days later he was beaten a nose by Abbey Lu in the Autumn Steeplechase. Flyilte jumped extremely well for a novice, and the three-mile journey did not appear to trouble him. Though he has not wou this season in eight starts, he has earned £365 in place-money. Last season he start, ed 13 times over hurdles for one win, two seconds and two thirds, and £3lO iu stakes. He Is a very safe jumper and has fallen only once this season and last. Hard to Train.

When Scottish Lad finished very fast to take second place in a division race at the Banks Peninsula meeting iu March, he gave indications of having struck the form .that wag earlier expected of him, but has failed in his six races since. He is a wellbred three-year-old bv Gynerlum from Lucetta, by Captain Bunsby from Lucy Limond, by Limond from Lucinette, and has an effortless action, but he lias been a difficult horse to keep in anything like robust condition, and this probably has been the primary cause of his disappointing form to date. Stakes Increased.

The Canterbury Jockey Club has decided to raise the stakes for the Grand National meeting this year from £9200 to £11,250. The Grand National Steeplechase lias gone up from £l5OO to £2OOO, the Grand National Hurdles from £lOOO to £1250, tlie Winter Cup -from £lOOO to £l2OO, and the Lincoln Steeplechase from £BOO to £lOOO. All the other races have been increased in value.. The Cashmere Plate is to be confined ’ .to three-year-olds, the Avonhead Handicap will be for four and live-year-olds, and the Woolston Handicap for three, four and live-year-olds. The distance for the faparua Handicap has been Increased from six to seven furlong®.

Winning Turn Duo. Owned by Mr. J. R. McKenzie and trained by F. D. Jones, the four-year-old Mr. standfast mare Chesnut Glow: has yet to win this season, her seven starts haring produced tw’o seconds, three thirds and a fourth. A win is therefore overdue. Her dam Legality, by Noblesse Oblige— Permissible is the dam also of Bambury, Whirling, Maroball Hall and Baifron. Lack of stamina has told against Chesnut Glow, but she may improve with age. To Race nt Ellerslie.

Since joining R. S. Bagby’s team British Mint, has contested only one race in the colours of hfs new owner, Mr. S. Girlsell. This was because the ground became very hard during the summer, and It was decided to wait till the going softened before asking Britisli Mint to sport silk again. The son of Britisli King lias been kept in regular work, and is In nice order to resume racing, now that conditions are favourable. British Mint has been entered for the chief flat events to be run at Ellerslie next month, and should not take long to strike form again.
